Installing Nuheat standard or custom mats is a pretty straightforward process. These mats are designed to fit your space accurately and install quickly.

It’s crucial that you purchase your Nuheat system from a verified seller to ensure you receive legitimate products and are eligible for warranty. The steps below walk you through the entire installation process so you can complete the job correctly.
Tools Needed
You’ll need the following tools and heating components for the Nuheat mat installation:
- Nuheat standard mat or custom heating mat
- Nuheat thermostat
- Digital multimeter
- ¼ in. square-notch trowel
- Margin trowel
- Grouting float
- Small plastic bristle brush
- Duct tape
- Sponge and bucket of water
- Mortar: thin-set mortar mixed with undiluted acrylic additive is recommended
1. Pre-Installation Prep
Before installing anything, make sure your Nuheat heating system and the room are ready:
- Confirm the mat size matches your floor plan and will fit perfectly when installed.
- If using a custom Nuheat mat, review the provided layout drawing carefully so you know exactly where each piece goes.
- Clean the floor thoroughly by sweeping and vacuuming.
Test electrical components:
- Test the mat’s resistance using a multimeter and record the value in your Nuheat handbook.
- Test the floor sensor resistance and record that as well.
- Compare readings to the values listed in the installation manual.
Note: If the resistance levels are not in the expected range, DO NOT proceed. Contact the Warm Your Floor team or the retailer you purchased from for assistance.

2. Subfloor Preparation and Mat Placement
The following steps outline subfloor prep and mat placement instructions for Nuheat heating systems:
- First, dry-fit mats in their intended locations. Confirm the mats cover only heated areas and verify the lead wires from the mat reach the junction boxes.
- Route lead wires along outside edges of the mats (don’t cross) and flatten any folds or bends in the mat.
- If needed, trim the fabric edges on the mat to fit – only on the three non-connection sides. NEVER cut heating wires.
- Overlap mats by placing fabric edge over fabric edge, ensuring the wires don’t cross. It’s ok for the fabric to touch.
- Maintain at least 3 inches of spacing between outermost wires. Apply thin-set between overlapping fabric edges if needed.
- Prepare the subfloor as you would for any tile installation. Over existing vinyl or wood floors, use expanded metal lath or manufacturer-approved methods for preparing the subfloor.
Note: Nuheat mats have no top or bottom and can be flipped or rotated in any direction.
3. Applying Thin-Set & Installing the Mat
Once the subfloor is prepared and the thermostat is installed, the next step is to install your Nuheat mats and apply the thin-set mortar. The steps for doing this are as follows:
- Using a 1/4″ square notch trowel, apply thin-set to small and manageable sections.
- Tip: Mix thin-set slightly thinner than normal for the first layer
- Carefully roll or place the mat into the mortar. Use a grouting float to remove air bubbles and smooth the surface.
- Continue section by section until the mat is fully embedded in the thin-set mortar, with no cables or fabric visible.
- Perform the second resistance test for both the mat and thermostat sensor at this point to ensure no damage was done during the installation.

4. Thermostat & Sensor Installation
Once the subfloor is prepared, it’s time to install the thermostat. Follow the steps below to do so:
- Start by placing the thermostat sensor in an area that’s open and accessible at all times.
- Run the sensor parallel to the heating wires and secure it to the subfloor with duct tape. Keep the sensor at least 12 inches from other heat sources.
- Center the sensor tip directly between heating wires. DO NOT cross the heating wires with the probe.
5. Install the Floor Tile
After you’ve installed all the heating elements, you’re ready to tile over your radiant floor heating. Follow these instructions:
- Apply thin-set with undiluted acrylic additive using a 1/4″ square-notch trowel. Create an even mortar bed over the mat.
- Lightly trowel a top coat to avoid damaging the heating system.
- Optional: apply a skim coat underside of tiles for a better bond
- Clean the grout lines while the thin-set is still wet using a sponge or plastic-bristled brush only. DO NOT use sharp tools.
- Damage caused during installation is not covered by warranty.
Once this is complete, conduct the third and final resistance test and record the values in your Nuheat installation manual. If your heating system fails the resistance test, reach out to the Warm Your Floor team.
6. System Startup
The final step is powering the heating system on and making sure it works correctly. This should only be done after the thin-set has completely cured and the thermostat is connected.
Start by briefly turning on the thermostat to make sure the system responds correctly and begins warming. Avoid running the system for extended periods during this initial test – uncured materials can be damaged by heat. When everything checks out, program the thermostat to your preferred schedule and begin using your floor heating system.
