Installing a Schluter shower system is one of the most reliable ways to build a fully waterproof, tile-ready shower from the ground up. Whether you’re doing a full remodel or building from scratch, this guide will walk you through every step of the installation process. If you’re using a Schluter Shower Kit, most of what you need is already included, which ensures that each piece will work together.
What You’ll Need Before You Start
Before starting your project, you’ll need to make sure you have the right materials and tools. Schluter Shower Kits come with the essential components to build a waterproof shower base. Here’s what you can expect to find in most kits:
- Pre-sloped shower tray
- Shower curb
- KERDI waterproofing membrane
- KERDI-BAND sealing strip
- Stainless steel drain
- Preformed waterproofing corners
- Pipe and mixing valve seals
In addition to the components, you’ll need a few tools and extra materials to complete the installation:
- Unmodified thin-set mortar
- Notched trowel (1/4″ x 3/16″ or 1/4″ x 1/4″)
- Utility knife
- Tape measure and level
- Flat trowel or roller
- Mixing bucket and drill with paddle
- Painter’s tape or chalk line
Installing the Schluter Shower System
1. Prep the Subfloor
- Start by inspecting the subfloor where the shower will be installed. It should be completely clean, dry, and level.
- Whether you’re working on a plywood or concrete base, it should not have any movement or deflection.
- If needed, reinforce the subfloor before continuing.
2. Install the Schluter Shower Tray
- Dry-fit the tray to make sure it aligns with your space and drain placement. If necessary, you can trim the foam tray with a utility knife to get an exact fit.
- Once it’s ready, use a notched trowel to apply the thin-set mortar to the subfloor.
- Press the tray firmly into place, ensuring full contact with the mortar bed.
- Check that it’s level and allow it to set based on the mortar manufacturer’s instructions before moving to the next step.
3. Install the Drain Flange
- Next, apply the thin-set mortar to the center area of the tray where the drain will sit.
- Press the bonding flange firmly into the mortar, making sure it’s even and fully embedded. Use a level to make sure the drain is properly aligned.
- Connect the flange to your existing plumbing using a no-hub drain coupling if required.
- To waterproof this connection, apply the KERDI membrane over the bonding flange and seal around the pipe with the included pipe and mixing valve seals.
4. Waterproof the Walls and Seams
- With your tray and drain in place, begin waterproofing the walls using KERDI membrane.
- Spread the thin-set mortar on the walls with a notched trowel and embed the membrane sheets from bottom to top, overlapping as needed.
- Use KERDI-BAND strips to seal seams between sheets and transitions from wall to floor.
- Use the preformed inside and outside corners to help reinforce edges.
- Smooth everything with a roller or flat trowel to remove any trapped air bubbles and make sure everything is fully bonded.
5. Add the Curb
- Measure and cut the foam curb to fit your shower opening.
- Embed the curb into a bed of mortar along the edge of the tray, pressing firmly to make sure there’s full contact.
- Waterproof the curb using the sealing strips and preformed corner pieces.
- Overlap all seams by at least two inches and smooth out the surface to ensure a watertight installation.
6. Install Niches, Benches, or Accessories (Optional)
- If you plan to include a shower niche, bench, or other Schluter accessories, now is the time to install them.
- These components should be embedded in thin-set mortar and aligned with your wall framing.
- Like the rest of the system, waterproof all seams and corners using the preformed seals.
7. Tile Your Shower
- After all waterproofing is complete and cured, you can begin installing your tile.
- Use the mortar that is approved for use with KERDI membranes. Follow your tile manufacturer’s recommendations for spacing and layout.
- Start from the bottom and work upward for walls, and begin from the drain out for the floor.
- Leave consistent gaps for grout joints and ensure everything is aligned.
8. Final Checklist Before Use
Before stepping into your new shower, double-check the following:
- All mortar and grout has cured for at least 24–48 hours
- Every seam, joint, and corner is fully waterproofed and sealed
- The plumbing has been tested for leaks
- Showerheads and fixtures are installed only after tiling and grout are fully dry
